Death Valley National Park can best be described in superlatives: it is the hottest and driest park in the U.S. and is home to the lowest point in North America. Its extreme temperatures make it best visited in the winter, when snow caps the mountains and the low light gives the desert a golden hue. Spring brings over 1000 species of plants to bloom. The park's many trails take hikers through salt flats, soft dunes, gorgeous canyons, natural bridges and vibrantly colored badlands. Joshua Tree : Photos of Joshua Tree National Park which is located in the Southern California Desert. The park encompasses nearly 800,000 acres of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts, conserving two separate desert ecosystems at different altitudes. The name of the park is derived from the distinctive Joshua Tree, a tall-growing variety of the yucca genus that grows prevalently within its boundaries. It's a photographer's paradise full of iconic views.

Two deserts, two large ecosystems whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation, come together at Joshua Tree National Park. Below 3,000 feet, the Colorado Desert encompasses the eastern part of the park and features natural gardens of creosote bush, ocotillo, and cholla cactus. The higher, moister, and slightly cooler Mojave Desert is the special habitat of the Joshua tree. In addition to Joshua tree forests, the western part of the park also includes some of the most interesting geologic displays found in California’s deserts. Five fan palm oases also dot the park, indicating those few areas where water occurs naturally and wildlife abounds.

While it may at first appear lifeless, the desert supports myriad of creatures that become active during the evening and early morning. Coyotes are commonly seen near the park roads making their rounds. Jackrabbits and the shy kangaroo rats emerge from their dens in the evenings to forage. Bobcats are less frequently seen, but a lucky traveler might catch one silhouetted against the moonlight. Birds in the park include burrowing owls, vultures, golden eagles, and roadrunners. Lizards, tarantulas, and rattlesnakes may be found among the rocks.

Valley of Fire, Nevada : Valley of Fire is the Crown Jewel of all "natural" parks, the Valley of Fire is a wonderland of geological rock formations and stunning scenery as spectacular as the glittering casinos of Las Vegas. I've been calling it "The Land of Little Arhes" for sometime now. Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest and largest state park of Nevada. It has existed since 1935. The name Fire Valley derives from the red sandstone formation, which evolved through dune movement 150 million years ago. Folding and erosion took care of the rest and formed the landscape as we know it today. Summers in the Mojave desert are very hot and dry, which is why mostly small bushes and cacti grow here. Lizards, snakes, coyotes, foxes, rabbits and rare desert turtles call the place their home.

It encompasses parts of Southeastern California (also known as the Colorado Desert), much of the Southern half of Arizona and parts of Northernwestern Mexico.

Zion Nat'l Park & the Subway : Zion National Park is one of the gems of the National Park system and one of Utah's most beloved tourist destinations. The park is located in the far southwestern corner of Utah, where the Colorado Plateau meets the mountains and valleys of the Great Basin. The closest town is Springdale. The sculptured cliffs of Zion Canyon provide visitors with landscapes of unmatched beauty and diversity. One of my favorite places for spending the cooler days of autumn in the canyon of the desert. It boast one of the most amazing fall color displays in the Southwest.

Fall Color in Southern California : More fall color in the local mountains just minutes outside of Los Angeles and San Diego!! Did a little bit of climbing to get this perspective that I found interesting. I love these spots so much I could sit here for while and just enjoy the piece and quite with a view. Southern California as you may know is not known for it's color at all what so ever, so I enjoy the challenge of showing that we do have fall color!
